Two original CDV photos of African American men, photographed circa 1865. The man with the walking stick has a studio imprint of H. Krause's Pioneer Gallery in Austin, Nevada, the other man's has a Civil War revenue stamp, which appears to have a cancellation date of the 1st of (month unreadable) 1865.
The men were possibly California, Nevada African American pioneers, miners, or both.. Or maybe they were in the area to celebrate The Colored People's Festival, which was held at Hamilton Hall in Grass Valley in honor of the second anniversary of Emancipation Day on January 2, 1865.
